Zurnas are made in different styles according to the region of Anatolia they originate in. The preferred woods for zurnas are plum, and to a lesser extent, mulberry.
Meys, similar to the Azeri balaban or Armenian duduk, are also made to specific measurements, out of plum and mulberry wood.
The “flute kaval”, made of plum or mulberry, is made mostly for students, but has a clear tone and is a useful instrument in its own right.
The “dilli kaval”, available in many different sizes, is the “fipple flute” counterpart to the better-known end-blown kaval, also available in a full range of keys and available in plum or mulberry woods.
